Why should God forgive me?
Its an important question. As a matter of fact, its a vital question. The assurance of your relationship with God and the assurance of your salvation hinges upon it.
Why *should* God forgive me?
Is it because I'm not a really bad person?
"There is not one that doeth good, not one."
"For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God."
1 Cor 6:9-10
Eph 5:5
Well, maybe God could forgive me because I have reasonable excuses for my sin? No; this is actually the opposite approach to having one's sins forgiven. First of all, if one is justifying one's sins, that is the opposite of *confessing* our sins. To confess means to admit we are wrong. God sees the heart.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins." This is why God should forgive me. Because of HIS faithfulness and HIS justice, which Christ fulfilled HIMSELF on the cross on our behalf. He bore our sins, He is the propitiation for our sins, and He put our sins away--He did away with them--so that we could be cleansed of them by grace through faith.
It is only through the blood of Jesus that we have forgiveness of sin.
Eph 1:7
Col 1:14
If you are unsure or lacking in assurance of your salvation, you can always confess your sins at any time. Pause, let God's Spirit reveal to you, convict you of your sins, and confess them.
Then ask God to cleanse you, picture yourself as a vessel, a water pot, and ask God to make you clean and fit for His purpose, dedicated to Him. And you know what? He will.
Then ask God to fill you up with His Spirit. Wait on Him and surrender yourself and receive Him. Submit yourself to Him.
