"Submit yourselves therefore unto God, resist the devil and he will flee from you." James 4:7
Have you said "I tried that, and it didn't work"?
How do you submit to God?
Do you submit your own way, or do you submit God's way?
The word "submit" means "to do the will of another."
If you are not submitting in the way that God prescribes, then you are not submitting. On the contrary, you are trying to bend God to your own will.
When we submit to God, we are saying to Him "Lord, take the wheel; I am unqualified."
When we submit to God, we are agreeing with God and believing His word. His word says that we are saved through grace by faith and that through our own works we cannot be saved. Eph 2:8 We cannot live a clean life and be saved. We cannot beg God and be saved. We cannot go on long fasts and deny ourselves to be saved. We must come to God by faith to be saved. Anyone who comes to God must do so by faith, for faith is the one way God has provided. "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Heb 11:6
Faith in what? Faith in the all sufficiency of Christ, in His lordship, in His payment for our sins and His redemption of us through His blood, in His victory over the devil, over the world, over temptation, and over death itself.
"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:17
God said "that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9
"And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment." 1 John 3:23
We cannot be saved through vague ideas about God, through man-made stories and fables about God, or through our own vain imaginings. The faith that saves is the faith that God Himself prescribes. That faith must involve "casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." 2 Cor 10:5
Saving faith is believing God's own word and acting accordingly.
